University of Minnesota

Study Abroad Requirements:

Students at the University of Minnesota (UMN) who wish to study abroad must be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 2.75.  They must also successfully complete the I-Core curriculum or equivalent coursework before participating on the CIMBA study abroad program.  Please note that these requirements vary from the CIMBA admission requirements.  CIMBA respects and adheres to all UMN study abroad guidelines.

The Application Process:

  1. UMN students should first complete the Carlson Global Institute study abroad application. Students may NOT apply to the CIMBA program until they have completed all application procedures with the Carlson Global Institute.
  2. UMN students should meet with a study abroad advisor in the Carlson school.
  3. Once the student has spoken with a study abroad advisor and been approved by the Carlson Global Institute, the students will complete the CIMBA online application.
  4. Students are required to attend a pre-departure orientation session at UMN the semester before they participate on the CIMBA program.

Visa Information:

If you are a US or EU citizen, you will not need to obtain a visa to study abroad, due to the length of the program being less than 90 days.  However, if you are an international student, you will be required to obtain an Italian visa to study abroad with CIMBA.

Course Equivalencies & Transcripts:

Transcripts from the University of Iowa (CIMBA’s accrediting university) can be requested and sent to UMN upon the student’s successful completion of the program. CIMBA courses will be reflected on the official UMN transcript as a block of transfer credit, which will not be factored into the overall UMN GPA. Students will be able to see individual courses and grades on the APAS report. Grades from CIMBA that are equivalent to a ‘D’ grade at the UMN will be considered a passing grade and reflected in the total transfer credit and on the APAS report. ‘D’ grades will not count towards major requirements.. For questions regarding the CIMBA transcripts, please contact the Carlson Global Institute (see below).”

Financial Aid & Transcripts:

UMN students participating on the CIMBA program will be charged a $1000 Carlson Program Fee to their UMN student account.  This fee is NOT included in the CIMBA tuition costs and must be paid separately. The Carlson Program Fee includes international health insurance, maintaining of resident student status at UMN, and program administration.  For an overview of projected costs, please visit the CIMBA at Carlson webpage.

The Carlson Global Institute does offer need and merit-based scholarships for UMN students studying abroad.  All eligible students are encouraged to apply.
