CIMBA Chronicles: An Unforgettable Study Abroad Experience

Participating in the CIMBA summer study abroad program in Italy was an enriching and life-changing experience. This reflection captures the essence of my journey, highlighting the academic, cultural, and personal growth that I experienced during my time abroad.

Academic Growth:

The CIMBA program offered a difficult, but fulfilling academic curriculum that challenged me to think critically and engage deeply with the material, but more importantly with my professors. Because of the amount of time spent in the classroom consistently with these professors and the engagement of the classes, I got to know my professors much more than I typically would in a standard semester-long course. It also helped that my classes were taught by distinguished professors who brought a wealth of knowledge and real-world professional experience to the classroom. I particularly appreciated the emphasis on leadership development and the practical application of business concepts. The collaborative projects and discussions helped cultivate a unique learning environment that pushed me to engage with classmates and increase my problem-solving skills.

Cultural Immersion:

Living in Italy provided an immediate opportunity to immerse myself in a completely new culture. From the moment I arrived, it was intriguing to see all the big and small things that are different compared to the United States. Things such as the rich history, art, food, and architecture are the big things that many people visit Italy to see. Exploring cities like Milan, Florence, and Rome allowed me to witness firsthand the cultural heritage that has shaped Italy over the centuries. Interacting with locals, sampling authentic Italian cuisine and wines, and participating in traditional festivals deepened my appreciation for the Italian way of life. This cultural immersion changed my global perspective and taught me how different people and countries operate in business, but also in their cultures, families, and daily lives.

Personal Growth:

The CIMBA program also offered different avenues to foster significant personal growth. Being in a foreign country pushed me out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to develop greater independence and adaptability. Navigating unfamiliar geographic and social environments, communicating in a different language, and managing the challenges of living abroad helped me build resilience and self-confidence. The friendships I formed with fellow students from both the United States and around the world were another highlight of the experience. I met so many friends that went to my college (University of Kansas) that I somehow never met before. I also met many other friends from a multitude of colleges all throughout the United States. These connections enriched my journey and provided a support system that made my time in Italy even more memorable.

Leadership Development:

One of the core components of the CIMBA program was its focus on leadership development. Through various activities, seminars, and day trips, I gained valuable insights into effective leadership practices. For example, I visited a local winery and a Mitsubishi HVAC plant on my class trips to learn from the leaders of these businesses. The emphasis one motional intelligence, decision-making, and team dynamics equipped me with essential skills that I can apply in both my personal and professional life. The opportunity to reflect on my leadership style and receive feedback from professionals and mentors was important for my personal development as a future leader.
