Magical Memories

As I sit at the picnic table on campus I take this time to reflect on how perfect this past weekend was. I’ll be honest, although I’ve had a great time thus far, I have been waiting for that “WOW” moment. The moment that exceeded all my expectations. Well, no more waiting for me. I spent my three day weekend in Lake Como and the wow moments kept coming. No matter how long I gazed out at the lake and up at the mountains I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was absolutely gorgeous and definitely too beautiful to take in. I think a month would give me enough time to finally understand that what I was seeing wasn’t the backdrop of a movie, but God’s artwork being displayed in the most graceful way possible. The mountains seemed to protect the town from the evil of the world, providing an oasis for those lucky enough to be there. My friends and I stayed in an airbnb in a local part of Lake Como, which was perfectly serene. Outside of our windows we saw Italians hanging their clothes up on the line in the morning and come evening we heard their clatter of dinnerware.

I will forever miss the pizzeria next door. Their pizza was easily the most memorable pizza I’ve ever had. I’m not just saying this because I was in Italy, sitting in front of a heavenly lake, feeling as if I was in la la land. No…this pizza was that good. Seat me in front of a dumpster, place in the back of a sweltering train, this pizza was mouth watering and could be enjoyed in any sort of situation. The dough was rolled thin but supported the toppings. The crust bubbled and perfectly burnt pieces were scattered about. It was completely satisfying. Dip your slice in peperoncino flavored olive oil and you are set. For life. Actually, not for life because you’ll need a heck of a lot more pizza.

Travel Tips:

  • Book an airbnb away for the touristy areas. Walk or take a bus to the more “popular” towns. You’ll find the best restaurants, the best people, and the secret views when you explore a place that most travelers don’t think to go.
  • Chill. Yes, there are tourist attractions to see and things to check off your to-do list, but taking time to relax and soak up the rays is just as great. When you’re going and going, it’s easy to forget what you have even seen! But if you slow down, sip your cappuccino for a few hours while talking to your friends, you really enjoy the moment and the beautiful place you are in.
  • Don’t worry about communicating with those at home. Trust me, I love talking to my family as much as anyone, but put your phone down and try not to think about letting your friends and family know what you’re doing. This way, you’ll remember more clearly about what you experienced and you’ll be able to describe your most favorite moments to everyone later. Taking pictures (to show others later) is okay though:) Capturing your surroundings is such an amazing way to remember beautiful moments forever.
  • Take a day trip to Menaggio, Lake Como. While you’re there, take a private boat tour! It’s so worth it.
