The #1 Thing to Have When Traveling

Written by Mikaela April 26, 2016

It’s sad to say that my time left on this beautiful Italian campus is coming to a close. Without a doubt though, I am leaving with memories of the amazing people I have met along my journey and the experiences that have improved who I am. Of course not forgetting the 8 incredible countries I’ve explored during my time in Europe, which I have also learned from immensely. Through it all, I have come to realize that one of the best things to take along with me during my travels is my smile (besides maybe my passport or money). Though cheesy, it is undoubtedly true.

Throughout all of the 8 countries I traveled to, I could sense and see the differences between each country’s culture: language, dress, and nonverbal communications. Even how to order a coffee or meal. These differences, of course, are all expected and I adapted to them as much I could. When it came down to it though, there was always one thing that never changed – the meaning of a smile. No matter where I travel to or who I am interacting with, a smile is universal. It means happiness, friendliness, and an overall sense of welcome.

When I have been stuck in awkward intercultural moments, like trying to ask someone who doesn’t speak English where the train station is, talking with a smile made all the difference in that interaction. The woman and I actually tried to play a game of charades to understand each other. She was willing to work with me to help me because I approached her with a smile.

No matter where you go, don’t forget to smile. The energy you show to others is usually the energy they give right back to you.
