Sunday in Venice

Written by Ellen January 28, 2013

Ciao! After a long week, I decided to trek to Venice for the day. A group of us rode the train for about an hour and seemed to travel to a world away. Through winding alleys we found our way to Piazza San Marco. Part of the group is in the Business, Culture and Society class in Paderno, so we have been talking about the Piazza in class for the last few days. It was great to see it in person after learning so much about it!

Carnival started the night before, so we experienced the Piazza flocked with Venetians dressed in masks and themed attire ready for the festivities to begin again. Hopefully I can make it back to see all the action at night!

After walking around the Piazza with gelato in hand, dodging aggressive pigeons, and venturing over the Rialto Bridge, a gondola ride was next on our list. Our guide took us for a half an hour ride through the city pointing out former homes of Mozart, Vivaldi, Casanova, and numerous others. He maneuvered effortlessly through the tight canals and introduced a quieter side of Venice only experienced by boat.

This upcoming week we have our first formal dinner and I can’t wait to experience the Italian cuisine!

Ciao!
